On our way home

We're sitting in San Diego airport - we've now been in 3 airports, 2 countries, and 4 states in 13 days. We've been in cars, planes and ferries, and have driven 1,696 miles! It's time to come home!

It's been an incredible trip and we are so glad we did it. We do agree, however, that we probably will not try something like this again. It was an experience like no other, but too much traveling in too few days, but what sights we saw in those days!

We had a great time in LA and then ended our trip with a wonderful visit with Craig and Brittney and got to meet precious Piper, who is adorable! They cooked us an amazing dinner and it was a great way to finish up our trip.

We hope you all enjoyed traveling along with us! We'll see you back in Mass! Love and peace!

Side by each - forever!

Winding Down

This morning is really the first time we've seen any clouds on this whole trip. We arrived in Pismo Beach yesterday afternoon after driving from Carmel, with a stop in Big Sur to ride horses on the beach. One more tick off my bucket list! It was pretty incredible. The drive most of the way was some of the most treacherous but beautiful we've seen so far! We also took a hike to see the waterfall on Big Sur - another scene like no other.

Today we head to Santa Barbara and points beyond. We're not sure yet where we will lay our heads yet tonight, but in any event, we will be in Los Angeles by tomorrow (Sunday) and then in San Diego on Monday. Will try and check in at least one more time.

Where in the world are Neil and Jayne?

You know when you're on vacation and after a few days, it's hard to remember what day it is? Well, we're finding it difficult to remember where we are as well!

As I write this, we are sitting in a laudremat in Monterey, California. Yes, it sucks that we're doing laundry, but let's face it, nothing is that bad in Monterey! We drove down here yesterday afternoon from San Francisco, which is an amazing city. The only disappointment was that Alcatraz was closed due to the government shutdown. We saw so much in the short time we were there: the crookedest road, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. I would definitely go back there again.

Today, after we finish our laundry, we will head down to the beach and then go see Pebble Beach and then to Carmel and Big Sur.  It won't be a big travel day today, which will be nice. Later on today, we'll be riding horses on Big Sur - doesn't get much better than that!

This trip has been awesome so far - it gets better every day! Until next time....

Eureka!

Eureka, California is where we woke up this morning. We had a fairly easy ride from Coos Bay, Oregon with a stop in Brookings, Oregon for lunch on the beach. Once again, we saw some amazing scenery on our way. We stopped and did one of those "drive through" the redwood trees on our way...ask me about the video...it's pretty funny!

We found a charming Victorian bed and breakfast in Eureka, which unfortunately, we found the amenities were equally Victorian. Oh well, it had an Irish pub downstairs which made up for anything that was lacking upstairs.

We drove from Eureka to Fort Bragg today, and drove through the Avenue of the Giants.  These redwood trees are amazing...so majestic! We are still hoping to do the zip line through the redwoods. Will keep you updated on that. Once we left route 101 and got onto route 1, the road narrowed and became extremely winding! There were "S" curves and sharp corners like I've never seen before...some of them you couldn't go more than 10 mph! It was a challenging drive and it took about an hour and a half to go about 24 miles! I wish we had taken some video on those roads...maybe tomorrow because I'm sure there are more of those roads ahead of us.

Tomorrow we head to San Francisco...good night for now.

We've made it this far...!

Woke up today in Cannon Beach, OR, where the final scene of "Goonies" was filmed. Haystack Rock welcomes citizens and tourists to watch the sun dip into the Pacific Ocean around 7pm most nights! The sunset was incredible! Oh ya, we got pix!

We think the town reminds of us of Chatham, restaurants & shops fill downtown. Plenty of folks out last night. It was an easy walk there from where we stayed.

Great place to spend a WE... not gonna, but would be fun!

Off to Coos Bay, historically referred to as Marshfield! Gonna find out if there's a connection to ours!

Our first few days

So, the alarm went off so early on Wednesday morning, but we were up and at 'em on time. We got picked up at 4:15 and made it to the airport on time. Everything was going great until Neil's pump crapped out just as we were going through security! He took it off and since his extra pumps were in the suitcase we had checked, he had to fly cross country without any insulin. Thankfully, it all worked out and he was able to put a new pump on when we got to Vancouver. From there, we travelled to Victoria (a 2 1/2 hour trip from Vancouver). Needless to say, it was a very long day, but successful. Had a great dinner and visit with Bob and Chris, and managed to stay awake until 9:30 (12:30 a.m. East coast time).

On Thursday, Bob and Chris took us on a wonderful tour of Victoria. What a beautiful city! Then we boarded a ferry back to the U.S. and stayed the night in Port Angeles, Washington. There was a screw-up with our rental car on Friday morning, but we worked it out and headed out on the first day of our road trip.

How beautiful it was driving through the National Olympic Forest! The roads twisted and turned and around every corner was another incredible sight! It was fabulous! At some points, I felt like we were miniature people. Some of these trees were ginormous!

The rest of the ride was incredible and seeing the Pacific Ocean through the trees for the first time was amazing! We made it into Oregon before nightfall as hoped and are settled into a fabulous hotel by the beach in Cannon Beach, just in time to watch the sunset...another amazing sight!

We'll check in again soon. Love you all!
